Here’s Why: As a young boy my grandmother taught me “You have to be a Friend, to have a Friend” this lesson has served me well throughout my life, and I have also passed this along, to my own children!!

While interviewing Mary Kay, I shared my own story of a neighborhood bully and I was glad to have all the information and experiences, I’d gained over the past 10 years with Online Security issues and radio interviews, to help me to understand and talk to the father of the bully, and share my concerns with him and his boy!

Internet Pornography: Addiction, Social Epidemic, or Something More?

Perhaps nothing in the mental health world has been more hotly contested than the extent of pornography’s addictiveness. Addiction is a term often bandied about rather carelessly, as we often label too much of anything an addiction. Medically, a substance is addictive if and only if an addict experiences both physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms when the substance is no longer available. Another component of addiction is the desire for more and more of the substance to achieve the same “high.” While many users of pornography have experienced symptoms that would classify pornography as an addiction, there’s still no substantiated proof that porn addiction actual exists.

Porn Addiction…or Desensitization?

This does not mean, however, that the proliferation of Internet pornography isn’t dangerous. For parents, Internet pornography can be especially troubling, as we worry that our children will be exposed to the sometimes violent and often unsavory world of porn, or that our children may inadvertently fall into the hands of sexual predators.

As someone who has studied the psychological and sociological facets of Internet pornography as a growing phenomenon, I can say that it is not really helpful to view pornography as an addiction. While there are extreme cases of individuals whose lives are severely compromised by watching pornography excessively, these are few and far between. A more common concern of pornography is the way that it often desensitizes viewers to the “real” act. A healthy sexuality, one that includes an emotionally supportive relationship at its center, is part and parcel of every adult’s overall wellbeing.

When pornography is consumed to the point of desensitization, to the point that actual intercourse with a partner is no longer enough to arouse an otherwise healthy individual, pornography becomes a dead-end escape and an ultimately far less rewarding substitution for interpersonal relationships. As the Last Psychiatrist put it in his blog post about pornography addiction:

“…online porn isn’t a drug, it isn’t an addiction, it isn’t a sign of deviancy or a trigger for disease: porn is junk food. It is a bag of potato chips you eat when you aren’t even hungry, and once you start and the initial “mmmm!” passes you’re all in, may as well finish the bag, you’ve ruined your diet/night already, start over clean tomorrow…Junk food is stripped of the essentials of real food, leaving just the vulgar, the simple, the obvious of taste: sugar, salt, fat, repeat…The mistake people make is that they think it is delicious, but it’s really just easy, comforting, reliable, satisfying.”

What about teens and pornography?

Statistics show that of children between the ages of 8 and 16, 90% have been exposed to Internet pornography. The average age at which a child first views porn is an alarming 11 years old. Although this may come as a shock to many parents, the likelihood that your child has viewed porn is quite high. For adults, occasional viewing of pornography may in most cases be largely innocuous. For children, however, exposure is without exception dangerous for various reasons, some obvious and some not so obvious.

Perhaps the greatest risk for young children having free roam of all Internet porn has to offer is that much of what’s out there is very extreme and very violent. It would not be an exaggeration to say that nearly all pornographic videos depict sex in a very exploitative way. When young children’s first exposure to the world of sexual imagery is one that is violent and demeaning, impressionable kids take fantastical Internet pornography to be a sexual norm.

The desensitization process noted earlier in this post can be fairly easily overcome by older men simply abstaining for a few days or weeks. However, for those who came of age when Internet porn was widely available (those in their teens to mid twenties), sexual dysfunction as a result of overstimulation with Internet pornography is a much graver problem. Thus, for teens in particular, Internet pornography can severally hamper their sexual and interpersonal health in the future.

Another serious danger that Internet pornography poses is one of a security risk. As much as we hate to even think about it, child predators and pedophiles often flock to pornographic websites to lure in young children, simply because they know that young people, especially young boys, frequent pornographic sites and forums.

How do I protect my teen from Internet pornography?

As a parent, it’s difficult to protect your children from all of life’s harms, but there are definitely ways in which you can prevent your child from becoming a victim of the Internet porn industry. One of the best preventative steps is simply not allowing your child access to a computer or Internet-enabled device in a private setting. Computers in their bedrooms should be a definite no-no. Any Internet that your child accesses at home should be in a very public room, like the family living room.

Of course, you can’t look over your child’s shoulder at all times isn’t feasible, and it’s likely that at some point or another, whether at a friend’s house or elsewhere, your child will access pornography. The best way to ensure that pornography doesn’t become an issue at all is if you talk to your child, as uncomfortable as it may seem. Present him or her the facts about healthy sex and Internet pornography. Explain to them that Internet pornography is not real sex; rather, it can destroy the enjoyment of healthy sex later in life.

I think another important thing to note, for both young children and adults alike, is that pornography, though we know it’s all fantasy, actually involves real men and women who are horrifically abused and exploited.

Neil McNerney is a Licensed Counselor, Certified Parent Coach, Professional Trainer, Community Speaker, & Author.

He has worked with parents for 25 years as a school counselor and in private practice in Reston, VA. Neil serves on the faculty of the Virginia Tech Graduate School of Marriage and Family Therapy, where he teaches courses on counseling children and their parents.

Neil speaks nationally on many family and school topics. His activities have brought him to hundreds of schools, where he has spoken to thousands of parents and staff on the topics of parenting, discipline, homework, the teenage brain, and leadership.

Neil and his wife, Colleen, have two children, Max 13, and Shannon 11. His kids provide him with plenty of opportunities to be humble and to remember how hard parenting can be. If there was one piece of advice Neil could pass on to every parent.

Dave and Bill welcome back Jeanine Swatton to the CHWR show today… Jeanine talked about – How To Protect Your Smartphone (from hacking etc) During the Holidays!!

She is also an advocate for stopping domestic violence as well as child abuse. She is the founder of iSwatton.com, a software startup focusing on web applications and mobile applications.

Jeanine was born and raised outside of Boston and currently live in Dublin, California. Jeanine has a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a Master’s Degree in Computer Science from Boston University. She currently pursuing another Master’s Degree in Cyber Security at the University of Maryland.

Jeanine is certified NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) Practitioner, Intuitive Life Coach, as well as a certified PCR (Psycho-Cellular Repatterning) Spiritual/Energy Healer.

On her free time, she counsels men and women on establishing and maintaining healthy relationships. My interests include anything involving the spiritual and psychic realm.

What I Do
I develop software applications for video security systems. I also develop IPhone applications on the side.

Why Engineering?
I have always been passionate about technology. When I was 16, I took a programming class at MIT in Boston. Ever since then, I was hooked!

My Day At Work
Currently, my team and I are preparing for an upcoming “software release” which means that we can finally sell the software and put it on the shelf. I am working on software bugs. If there are any problems with the code, for example, it crashes, I investigate the cause of the problem and fix it. I also add new features/enhancements to the application. I put together documentation on the changes I made.

The Best Part of Being an Engineer
I love the challenge of creating new applications and seeing the finished product!

Proud Moments
With my first engineering job, I was able to put together test software for the missile guidance system for the Trident Missiles. Once I learned one programming language, i was able to learn so many others as well, including the Objective C programming language for IPhone applications!

Challenges
There have been struggles in terms of being taken seriously as a woman in this field. However, I have not let anyone discourage me from excelling in this field.

My Family
My family was supportive in terms of education but they were not supportive in regards to my passion for engineering. They felt that is was not a woman’s job. They feel differently about it now.

Dreams and Goals
My short-term goal is to inspire young girls and women to pursue a career in engineering. One of my many long-term goals is to inspire and motivate women to live out their passion. I am also an advocate to stop child abuse and domestic violence. I would love to be more involved in these causes. Programming will always be a part of my life. I would love to help non-profits get up to speed in terms of technology. I would love to help them develop a web presence through search engine optimization.

Inspiration
My professors at Boston University were extremely supportive. The chairman of the program inspired me to pursue a Master’s degree. I am forever grateful for the support and encouragement I received from each and every one of the faculty members.

Hobbies
I love to play the piano and love writing articles on technology. I also am a life coach for women.

Want to be an Engineer?
Do it! We are underrepresented in this field! If you do not know how to go about doing it, contact me or another female engineer. We will get you on the path to success. Do not let anyone discourage you from taking this path! I had many people telling me that I could not work in this industry because I was a woman. I did not let them get to me! We are capable of doing whatever we want in life!

School Days
I went to school at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst for my undergraduate degree. I was the only woman in the programming class! For graduate school, I attended Boston University and received a Master’s degree in Computer Science.

Tips on Keeping Your Child Safe in the Electronic Communications World

As if inflation, shaky employment futures, rising interest rates, falling wages and political or social-economic and eco-terrorism weren’t enough of a burden for parents, add the worry about keeping your child safe from bullies and predators on the Internet: That any parent in today’s world maintains any vestige of sanity might seem truly amazing.

You teach your child early about looking both ways when crossing the street, about drinking and about drugs. Have you instilled in your child safety rules that are being followed on the Internet? Have you taught your child what to do and not do, what is considered a crime and how it applies to electronic communications, including cell phones, texting and website content?

Teach—and Watch

Teaching your child to never give her real name may seem to the child as asking him to lie, but just as you taught him never to talk to strangers when he was younger, teach him to never give personal information—his name, address or phone numbers—to people he does not know well in real life. Giving a user name or email address on an instant messaging system might be okay, but if it’s not something you want a real-life stranger to have, teach your child to not give it over the Internet, even if the child considers the other person a best Internet friend.

Make the child understand that he never knows if a picture is real or the person who says he’s 12 years old actually is. Online predators have perfected their online personas and tailor profiles and language to match target genders and ages.

Watch for behavior changes. If a child is extraordinarily secretive about a special online friend, you might consider investigating your child’s activity. If your child becomes sullen, withdrawn or argumentative beyond the norm, have a serious conversation about what’s happening in the child’s life: Are people talking about him, texting about him or posting derogatory information about him on the Internet?

Unlike “standard” bullying, electronic bullying can include social networking or websites, but it also includes use of cell phones both in conversation and in text messages or picture form. Any electronic bullying is a crime called cyberbullying.

Teach your child that telling you about electronic harassment is exactly the right thing to do. Rarely do cyberbullies stop on their own. Returning the behavior creates a cyberbully in your child, and both are wrong, and both are breaking the law.

Feeling upset about electronic harassment is natural. Doing nothing about it creates additional stress and unhealthy thoughts that can damage your child’s sense of self-worth. Talk with your child often about Internet and cell phone use. Don’t hesitate to ask for the phone to check messages or to check History files on a child’s computer to see what websites the child is viewing.

In extreme cases, cell phone providers can present communications histories, but each provider has its own policy and privacy standards. Extreme cases may also suggest use of child-lock programs above and beyond browser controls. They may also suggest loading a keystroke recording program that illuminates what your child is typing, even if, for example, IM histories are not saved.

Do what’s necessary to protect your child on the Internet and electronic communication, but early dialogue between parent and child always lays a solid platform of safety and enjoyment.

My grandparents raised me and I love them dearly not only as my grandma and grandpa, but as well as my Mom & Dad… even though they had raised their own family already by the early 60′s they took on a brand new adventure. Not to mention they did the majority of raising their kids during our countries most tremulous times, including: the 1920′s and then through all of the great depression, and throughout the great wars of the 1900′s until they passed away… they remained steadfast in their family values, beliefs and especially their Wardell’s work ethics… and the habit of

Well this past week at The CyberHood Watch… this is exactly what Dave and I did and experienced, during these CHW course changing events, and now we are even more committed and excited about our future…

But just realizing that we’ve been diligently preparing for the past 2 decades, with our own families, businesses and our online Cyber experiences!
